TIPS AND TRICKS FROM HYPER PHIL

How did I get my nickname, Hyperphil?  In September 1994 I was in a tent on Scott’s Pass, at an aid station for the Wasatch 100 in the middle of the night.  The walls were shaking in the wind and I was miserable.  This was my first footrace of any kind.  My quads were shot and I had been hurling.

Richard Randall was working the aid station.  He earned the nickname “Grizz” when on local news, during the race the year before, he had compared running 100s to being chased by grizzly bears, and since the bears were gone, well, 100s were all that were left.  Anyway, Grizz gave my thighs a good squeeze (“What the %^$$%!”), told me I’d be OK, and dubbed me Hyperphil then and there.

I learned a lot from Grizz and other veterans in those years.  Stick around and this list will grow.
